OVERVIEW

As part of Google's UX Design certificate, I designed a conceptual movie theater app to make it easier for families to order movies tickets and seat together.

TIMELINE

Feb 2023 - April 2023

COURSE

GOOGLE UX Professional design certificate

MY ROLE

Sole project

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Families lack a user intuitive movie theater app with a family seating option.

GOAL

Build a user intuitive movie theater app that is family friendly.

THE FINAL DESIGN SOLUTION

Overview of the app.

USER RESEARCH

I selected five survey respondents to participate in a brief  interview to learn more about their thoughts, feelings, and identify pain points.

 EMPATHIZING WITH USERS

From my user interviews, I created two user personas: Lisa & Kombs.

USER JOURNEY MAP

Lisa is a nurse who needs an app with a family seating option because it makes her movie experience with her family more fun.

  • Analyzing our personas helped us develop a journey map highlighting the pain points and the opportunities for improvement.

STORYBOARD

The big picture storyboard focuses on the overall user experience (seen to the right), while the close-up storyboard focuses on the specific actions the user takes inside the app.

  • To further empathize with the user, I sketched both big picture and close-up storyboards for one of my personas, Kombs.

ASSESSING THE COMPETITION

Users showed frustration while trying to reserve seating for their family members in all three apps.

We analyzed the desktop experience, mobile experience, accessibility, user flow, navigation, features, navigation and descriptiveness

PAIN POINTS

We derived a comprehensive list of users pain points by analyzing and combining all our research methods.

Family seating - Inability to choose a good seating position for a family of 4.

Non user friendly - Non intuitive, non user friendly and non reliable.

Upcoming movies - Inability to get accurate updates on upcoming future movies.

IDEATION

WIREFRAMING

I drafted different screens with the user in mind focusing on simplicity while addressing their pain points.

For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and easy process of ordering process to help users save time.

TRANSITIONING TO DIGITAL WIREFRAME

I moved to Figma to create digital wireframes for all of the screens.

  • As the initial design continued, I made sure to base the screen designs from the feedback from my user’s research.

LOW FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

This low fidelity prototype will be used in a usability study.

USABILITY STUDY

A redesigned seat selection screen, food ordering option and a homepage button were identified improvements from the usability study.

Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a low fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockup needed refining.

TAKEAWAYS

Impact:

The app makes users feel like Kombs movies had the users feedback in mind when designing and iterating the app.

One quote from peer feedback

“The app now makes it easy for me to seat my family together with the press of one button. Very user intuitive and user friendly.”

What I learned:

While designing the Kombs movie app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the design process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each interaction of the app’s design.

NEXT STEPS

Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed

Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
